American Express Co. is announcing today that cardholders will be able to pay their mortgages using plastic, and get credit-card rewards for doing so.
American Home Mortgage Investment Corp. and IndyMac Bancorp Inc., two of the top 10 residential-mortgage originators, are the first lenders to sign up for the program.
Participants will be charged a one-time fee of $395 paid to the mortgage lender to cover account management. Once enrolled, the cardholder will earn cash back, airline points or other types of rewards offered by their American Express card.
A cardholder with a $2,500 monthly mortgage would amass 30,000 card points a year.

Here is another casualty of the slumping condo hotel conversion market.
Nicky Hilton's South Beach condo hotel is kaput and her developer partner is seeking bankruptcy protection so he can turn the property into another hotel, It was obvious the socialite-designers debut Nicky O hotel was in trouble when it did not open as planned late last year and her reps did not return calls asking what was up. Hilton also was supposed to have a Nicky O in Chicago, but that project has stalled, too. So stay tuned to see if she resurfaces as a hotelier. It is not too surprising that this project did not take off due to the small size rooms that were being sold. There are however, still some fantastic condo hotel opportunities in South Beach.

These six tips will help prospective buyers find out if they are ready for homeownership.
1. Take a first-time homebuyer class. It will make repairing a credit score and shopping for a loan less stressful.
2. Be conservative. Borrowing too much can mean stretching and even sacrificing, to the point that it’s hard to even keep a six pack of beer in the fridge.
3. Organize documents. First-time buyers should keep a pay stub, W-2, and bank and retirement account statements on hand to expedite the loan application process.
4. Get pre-approved. Before starting the home buying process, consumers should get pre-approved by at least one lender. Being pre-approved won't lock buyers in to a loan but it may save them the heartache of falling in love with a home they really can't afford.
5. Play house. Every month, prospective buyers should bank the amount that they'd have to pay if they owned a home. It's good practice so they'll be ready for the real thing.
